The Scottish Society of Jersey organises a whole range of activities and functions throughout the year. They include social occasions for the whole family, a celebration for St Andrew's Night and Burns' Night. There is a traditional Burns' Gentlemens' Supper and traditional Hogmanay party.
The main traditional Scottish events that we hold every year are outlined below.
St Andrew's Night
Saint Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland, and St. Andrew's Day is celebrated by Scots around the world on the 30th November. The Scottish Society of Jersey hold an annual dinner dance to celebrate and usually hold it on the Saturday nearest to St Andrew's Day. The event usually comprises of a traditional Scottish dinner followed by after dinner speeches the music and dancing. The speech is a toast to the Nation of Scotland.
Burns' Night
This event is an annual celebratory tribute to the life, works and spirit of the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796) which is usually celebrated on, or around, the Bard's birthday on 25 January. This event is a dinner dance which comprises of a traditional Scottish dinner followed by an after dinner speech about the life and times of Robert Burns. Then music and dancing to a Ceilidh band. 2009 was the 250th anniversary of his birth.
Burns' Gentlemens' Supper
This is a traditional men only event which the Scottish Society of Jersey usually holds in February/March. It is a traditional meal with after dinner speeches and much sampling of whisky.
Hogmanay
Or New Year's Eve to everyone else - is a family event for the Scottish Society of Jersey. Most years we organise a traditional Hogmanay party with ceilidh dancing, haggis and bagpipers.
Other Events
We also hold a ceilidh in the summer for all the family as well as our annual golf day. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Scottish Society of Jersey is held as close as possible to the financial year end of 31 March each year.
